TRANSCRIPT

Instead of the regular release of Scoring Magic this week, Hug House Productions is participating in #PodcastBlackout. We are taking time to educate ourselves and donate to causes in defense of Black lives. If you’re not Black, we hope you are doing the same.

Let’s start by listing off the names of some of the people whose deaths at the hands of police have been reported and recognized. Please keep in mind that this is in no way a complete list of the Black people who have been murdered by police.

  • Trayvon Martin
  • Tamir Rice
  • Michael Brown
  • Eric Garner
  • Sandra Bland
  • Freddie Gray
  • Alton Sterling
  • Philando Castile
  • Botham Jean
  • Atatiana Jefferson
  • Ahmaud Arbery
  • Doug Lewis
  • Breonna Taylor
  • and George Floyd

A name that should be on more lists is that of Dion Johnson, a Black man from Phoenix, Arizona who was shot to death by police on May 25th, 2020 while asleep in his car. He was 28 years old.

Instead of listening to our shows we encourage you to listen to, and financially support if possible, shows by Black creators. Here are some fiction podcasts by Black creators that you can listen to right now:

Again, this is not an all-inclusive list of every podcast made by Black creators, and to find even more, you should be following and financially supporting Berry Sykes, the creator of Podcasts in Color. Podcasts In Color is an online directory of podcasts by people of color and Berry has been doing and continues to do an amazing job with compiling all of these shows.

You can find links in our show notes and transcript to some of the organizations that are taking donations for this cause, as well as all of the shows we mentioned in the episode and to PodcastsInColor.com. Please consider checking them out and subscribing and donating where you can.
